The Mifgash - Day One

The First Day of the Mifgash
The kids arrived at Har VaGai with their hosts. Everyone was happy and excited. While our Israeli friends went to their first class, we met with Peter, one of the teachers at Har VaGai, who told us the story of how he came to live in Israel. We then went to the gym (which is a large dome-shaped building) to rehearse for the Yom HaShoah assembly which began at 10 am following the siren. It was a beautiful assembly, with readings, songs and film. The Calgary kids participated by reading two poems - one in Hebrew and one in English. They did an excellent job!
After the assembly, the entire group met with Barry and Amnon, two other teachers at the school, for a session on the Holocaust. We then walked to the nearby memorial for the helicopter disaster that took place close to the school 16 years ago in which 73 soldiers were killed. This is a very beautiful memorial site. It was also very hot outside!  There was early dismissal today and the kids headed home at around 2:00.

Today's pictures are of the Yom HaShoah assembly and the helicopter memorial.
